Obit from the Bloomington Newspaper, 1938: WAR VET DIES IN KENTUCKY
Illness of Month proves fatal to Edward T. Cates.
Edward T Cates, 54, veteran of two wars and lifelong resident of Bloomington and vicinity, died at 3:45PM Monday at the Veterans Hospital in Outwood, KY.
On May 27 he became critically ill and was taken from teh Turner hotel to the Veterans hospital in Indianapolis. His condition growing worse, he was taken to the Outwood hospital Wednesday where, growing steadily weaker, he succumbed.
Veteran Cates spent the greater part of his life in Bloomington with the exception of a few years when he was in the hotel business with his father, Charles Cates, at Bloomfield and Greencastle. He served his enlistment in the Phillipine Islands and, for five years on the Mexican border and was a member of the Masonic Order.
The survivors are his two sisters Mrs. Elizabeth Parham and Mrs. Lucille Smith, a nephew, G L Gillespie, all of Bloomington; and a niece, Mrs. Doris Cates Clark of St Petersburg FL. A twin brother, Fred Cates and a sister, Laura Cates Gillepie died in 1928 and October of this year, respectively.
The Rev R O Pearson, pator of the Fairview Methodist church of which Cates was a member, will officiate at the funeral services which will be held at 2:30pm Thursday at the Weir Funeral Home. The burial will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery with the firing squad of the American Legion in charge.
The pallbearers will be: Lester Hinkle, Fred Sklevin(??), James W Blair, Roy Fatsigner, T J Louden and Bea Wray.

"Edward T. Cates died on June 27, 1938, and was buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, Indiana, according to a book of compiled records entitled ROSE HILL CEMETERY, 1821-1976.

Rumors have abound for years regarding Edward Cates. He's been something of a mystery. Although, I have found no reason for the mystery surrounding him.

His one and only wife, Viola Brannon, apparently told family members to come that Cates had died during "the war" of exposure to gas. Clearly a fabrication since he lived until 1938 and was already out of the "service". In the 1900 census, while living with her next husband-to-be, she claimed that she was a widow after 8 years of marriage. Her young son, Gray, was 1 year old. Further, he didn't enter the Armed Forces until 1913 when his young son was 4 yrs old. Perhaps since she was remarried and moved by the time Cates got out of the Armed Forces, she simply told her son that his father was dead to prevent Cates from seeing his son or his son looking for him.
The family lore also held that Edward Cates had a twin brother who died at birth. Again, this is simply not true. Edwards' twin brother, Fred, lived until 1929 and died at the age of 45 yrs.
Further lore tells us that Edward's mother had disowned him because she did not approve of his marriage to Viola and that she was the owner of a boarding house. There is no evidence to support the claim that Edward was disowned by his mother, nor is there any evidence to prove she owned a boarding house. There is evidence that Edward's parents and family frequently lived at the hotels Charles, his father, was managing, however.
In the 1880 census of Monroe Co IN, there is a Charles Cates (age 21) living with his mother, Nancy (age 44). Additionally, the following siblings of Charles were at that residence: Melinda J (age 15), Andrew (age 14), and George N (age 9)
In the 1900 Census of Monroe Co IN, Charles H Cates (age 44), his wife Catherine (age 35), Edward and Fred (both 16 yrs old) were living in Bloomington IN. They lived in the home (I think this was a hotel) of John G Bundy. Charles and Catherine were both born in IN. His parents were both born in KY, hers were born in Canada or England.
In the 1920 census, Edward was living with his mother and 2 stepsisters in Bloomington, Indiana. Later he worked at several of the hotels his father worked at.
My brother remembers great grandma Viola Taasevigen telling him once that she had "buried all of her husbands". Again, simply not true. Cates lived for 28 years after they divorced, Conlin and she divorced after 10 yrs prior to 1923 and I don't know when he died but he was alive when he left her, her third and final husband, Emil Taasevigen, lived until 1983 - 10 years after she died and many years after their divorce sometime after 1930. Great-Grandma liked to tell stories, apparently! ha ha

Charles H. Cates completed his years service in jail last Saturday at 9:30a.m. He was sued something over a year ago by Mary Mathews for bastardy, and the suit eventuated in his incarceration in jail for that period. Most of our citizens believe his declarations, often made, of innocency. We not the curious fact that on the day after Cates’ release from imprisonment the family of the man who contributed most to Cates’ discomfort was afflicted by a ravishment of one of its members under the most humiliating circumstances, that that family left town under an ominous cloud, and that that man himself is having more trouble than cheerful Charley ever had in his gloomiest hours. Looks like the providence of God, to the preachers, and like the “whirligig of time” to the balance of us.
Put her thar, Charley, glad you’re out.”

Andrew J Cates (son of Calvin and Nancy (Todd) Cates
Andrew J Cates and Emma Young married 12 Mar 1884, Monroe Co Indiana They had a daughter, name not listed, born 3 Feb 1885, Monroe Co, Indiana No other children found born to this couple or to Emma Young.

In Charles H Cates Obituary, 1906, it says that brother Andrew is living in Mena, Arkansas.

1910 Fed census has A J Cates, a single male, no age or pob, living as a boarder at 1113 Sherwood Ave, Mena, Polk, AR, no father or mother pob given, occ/ Railroad - yard____. (I believe this info was given by the head of house or wife and they simply didn't know the missing information).

1920 Fed Census, Crawford, Van Buren, AR, has A J Cates, age 53, Married, b/ Indiana, Fa/ PA, Mo/ KY occ/ Railroad Switchman. Wife: Nora age 37, Married, b/ Arkansas, Fa/ MA, Mo/ KY no occ no children listed.

There is a record in Crawford, Arkansas of Nora Haines and A J Cates marriage, 30 Nov 1899. Nora's possible parents are Henry G and Allice Haines, Van Buren, Crawford, AR.

In the 1900 census of Fulton, Fountain, Indiana there is an Emmaline M Starkey married four years to Joseph Starkey b/ abt 1877. They have one child who is 2 yrs old. She has two children, 1) Gusti Anna b/ Feb 1885 Indiana and 2) Jesse D Cates b/ Oct 1886. Emmaline was b/ June 1869 in Indiana.

It appears that Andrew and Emma split up while Emma was pregnant or just after she gave birth in 1886. Probably while she was pregnant if the Emma that was married to Andrew is indeed the Emmaline who married Joseph in 1886.

I can't find Andrew J Cates in any 1900 census records or the 1930 census records.

The United States Marshals were responsible for taking the first census. Information about households and individuals was collect by house to house canvass. As time went on, more and more information was added to the census, it originally started with just the name of the head of the household and the number of persons living at the household broken down by free white males 16+ yrs old, free white males under 16 yrs, free white females, slaves, and all other free persons (by sex and color). Untaxed indians were not included in the census. By a provision in the US Constitution, the census' original purpose was the apportionment of the House of Representatives based on population... hence, a "head count" was needed. The 1790 records for several states were destroyed in the War of 1812. Most of the 1890 census' were burned in a fire in 1921 and only a few fragments of the original census exist today.
